  • Jim Ned Consolidated School District
    • Jim Ned, a Delaware Indian chief, served as an interpreter between whites and Native Americans. In 1844, Jim Ned interpreted for several tribes near present day Mexia. Historical records and letters indicate that he was not always honest and may have stirred up trouble between whites and Native Americans.  His escapades were famous, but he was considered a successful scout and spy. In the early 1900s, thirty-one small schools in southern Taylor County consolidated to form Jim Ned CISD. In 1948, the high school for the region was South Taylor High School, but earned the name Jim Ned High School in 1957 when the town of Lawn joined the district. Jim Ned is also the name of the creek that runs through the school district and the surrounding communities are part of the Jim Ned Valley.
